Hellenic Police Enhance Security After Demonstrations Targeting Israeli Cruise Ship

Greek authorities have significantly increased security measures at multiple major ports in an attempt to prevent protesters from targeting a passenger ship carrying visitors from Israel on an 11-day voyage around the Mediterranean.

Latest Demonstrations Prompt Increased Security

The security reinforcement at Patras and Katakolo followed recent demonstrations when the MS Crown Iris made port in Kalamata recently. Earlier, travelers aboard the same vessel were prevented from disembarking and the ship was forced to divert to Cyprus after community members held rallies on the Aegean isle of Syros.

"In spite of the ceasefire, Israel is persisting with its attacks in Gaza," commented Christina Lada who joined the Kalamata demonstration. "Innocent, non-combatant people are being slain."

Tourist Encounter and Public Opinion

From higher vantage points, passengers watched as demonstrators in Kalamata shouted: "You need the police, you're not wanted in Greece."

A leading campaigner, who dedicated the summer to coordinating anti-conflict rallies throughout Greece, stated: "Israeli visitors who support the policies of their government aren't accepted here."

Geopolitical Context and Foreign Ties

An international relations expert explained: "Due to regional nearness and our traditional ties with the Arab world, the ordinary Greek person is more sensitive to what is occurring in Gaza than the average European from central or northern regions."

"The Hellenic Republic is in a challenging situation," he added. "The State of Israel is significantly more crucial for us as an associate than it is for most European states."

Economic and Travel Consequences

Government statistics indicate that over 600,000 Israeli travelers came to Greece in 2024, with projections of even higher numbers this year. This substantial influx emphasizes the greatly strengthened connection between the two countries since the 1980s, when Greek leadership maintained a staunchly pro-Palestinian stance.

Strategic Partnership and Regional Considerations

Regarding Hellenic administration, Israel represents not only a important balance to neighboring competitor Turkey but also provides the additional advantage of better official channels to Washington.

"The Hellenic Republic is not going to endanger its ties with Israel," stated the expert. "But from a compassionate viewpoint we must be more accepting, more balanced, more resolved to show the misdeeds of Israel in Gaza."

Growing Demonstration Campaign and Global Response

The extent of the Greek demonstration campaign has surprised Israeli authorities. In recent months, the state's external affairs office counseled travelers to keep discreet, while local media described Athens as a "former paradise" due to protest markings emerging on buildings in the urban center.

The secretary-general of the Hebrew Communities Council in Greece expressed concern: "Naturally we're worried. The sort of rhetoric we're experiencing can so easily become antisemitic."

Future Developments and Requests

Increasingly, protesters have focused on Athens' close ties with Israel. Approximately 5,000 people lately went to Crete to request the shutdown of the Souda Bay naval base, a NATO base that after the commencement of war in Gaza has operated as a important supply station for US aircraft carriers, combat aircraft and ships headed to Israel.

"Our efforts have produced results," stated an anti-racist coordinator. "Our main demand, at present, is to cease all cooperation with Israel."
