The Facts Concerning Jihad al-Shamie, this Manchester Synagogue Attacker

For those living nearby, Jihad al-Shamie seemed to lead a largely unremarkable existence: a new father who engaged in weight training and parked his car inconsiderately outside the residence he lived with his parents.

Born to a trauma surgeon, Shamie seemed to have a positive upbringing, with two younger brothers who later pursued notable jobs in IT and pharmacology.

However, after his death following his execution of a violent act against a synagogue, a more complete understanding has emerged. Investigators found that Shamie was previously declared insolvency, previously sentenced for petty crimes and an accused of sexual assault when he set upon worshippers marking Yom Kippur.

Early Years Appearing Ordinary

Jihad al-Shamie had what appeared to be a typical early life in Manchester throughout that decade. In home videos made for his grandfather in Syria, he cuddles a cat in the rear yard, saying to his dad he wishes to give it food; in different footage he helps his sibling on a swing on the lawn.

Shamie shared his childhood with brothers born after him, the family enjoying days out to Camelot theme park, Chester zoo and the shopping complex, and the siblings were involved in educational Christmas performances during the festive season.

At a former family home, near the healthcare institution where Shamie’s father previously worked, neighbors described a “normal little boy” who was from a “decent household””.

He would interact positively with peers on the street, and the single odd behavior a neighbor mentioned was that he spent most of the day playing on a handheld computer game – to the point that it caused excessive blinking.

“The family seemed fine, the father worked over the road, he seemed quite nice, always spoke to me. The household appeared respectable, the parent frequently socialized. He used to play on a game, his gaming sessions lasted hours, his eyes would frequently blink.”

‘A Typical Individual’

Residents living in his peaceful neighborhood in Prestwich characterized him as a “straightforward, ordinary lad” who would frequently work out in his yard area, practicing strength training, with someone noting he regularly parked his car “badly” outside her house.

The family are believed to have moved to the semi-detached house, approximately two miles away from the location of the incident, approximately fifteen years back, when Shamie was about to turn 20. During the siblings' childhood, the relatives made their home in the neighboring district.

Son of a Trauma Surgeon

His dad, Faraj al-Shamie, journeyed internationally as a trauma surgeon, practicing in dangerous regions across the globe, such as Iraq, Afghanistan and South Sudan. He previously worked for NGOs, including the International Committee of the Red Cross, and received instruction from famous doctor David Nott in the Mosul municipality within Iraq.

Relative's Declaration

Faraj al-Shamie has separated the relatives from his child's violent actions, sharing a statement on Facebook that expressed: “Information coming from the Manchester area regarding the terrorist attack directed against a Hebrew temple has been a extremely troubling for our household.

“Our family unit in the UK and abroad explicitly rejects this horrific action, which affected unarmed, ordinary people. We fully distance ourselves from this assault and communicate our intense surprise and sadness concerning the incident. Our hearts and thoughts are with the injured and their loved ones, and we wish them fortitude and solace.”

Individual Circumstances

Shamie had earlier served as an educator, instructing in language and coding. However, he was listed as unemployed in government insolvency records which revealed he sought financial assistance the previous September while staying in the family residence. Merely four weeks afterward, his dad uploaded an image of him with a recently born child, captioning the picture “Excellent Addition to the Family”.

Criminal Past

Investigators reported that Shamie was under investigation for sexual assault when he steered his modest automobile into congregation members at the synagogue. It is not known when the alleged sex attack happened but it is believed to have occurred recently. He was subject to ongoing scrutiny by local law enforcement.

He had encountered problems earlier, as per informants, who said he had a criminal record for further petty crimes. He was nevertheless not monitored by counter-terror police or security services before the incident.

Radicalisation

Following the violent incident, investigators have been pulling apart every strand of Shamie’s life to determine which influences directed him on the road to extremism. The process entails studying call histories, researching personal connections, and analyzing his online activity.

He seemed to have been obsessed on the difficulties facing Islamic communities in areas within the Arab world, particularly in recent years in Gaza. A social media profile, thought to be his has a machinegun as its profile picture, alongside a white flower, and what appears to be a copy of the Qur’an.

A solitary message on the inactive social media profile discusses the Manbij incident in Syria in 2016, and requests heavenly intervention to “oppose individuals who harmed and murdered them.”
